Italy’s musical and artistic output during the Renaissance influenced all of Europe. In particular, the wealth of the port city of Venice and its Cathedral of St. Mark put even the Vatican’s music to shame. They supported and employed musicians like Claudio Monteverdi and Giovanni Gabrieli whose compositions were so substantial that centuries later Bach used and built upon their musical styles. The result is a stunningly beautiful body of music which gives voices to every point on the pendulum of human emotion. Together, the Raleigh Bach Soloists, the North Carolina Baroque Chamber Players, and the Washington Cornet and Sackbut Ensemble will bring this music to life in our very own church on Oct. 12, at 7 p.m.

This evening we take our inspiration from the famed service of vespers of St. Mark’s, Venice, in which settings of the Psalms are scored for brass, strings, and often multiple choirs singing at once. This concert will feature the Washington Cornet and Sackbut Ensemble. Sackbuts, the precursor to the modern day trombone, were common place instruments to play with voices in the Renaissance but are rarely heard today.
A reception will take place at intermission where you’ll have the chance socialize with friends and greet our musicians.
