“Ravenscroft Uncovered,” a Historical Essay by The Rev. Dr. Winston B. Charles
Did you know the remains of North Carolina’s first bishop, and Christ Church’s first rector, The Rt. Rev. John Stark Ravenscroft, are buried on our church site? Although history had recorded Bishop Ravenscroft’s interment under the chancel area of the original church in 1830, the memory of Ravenscroft’s re-burial was lost to time, and there were no church records describing exactly where his remains might be. Until 2001, it was unclear to recent generations of parishioners whether Bishop Ravenscroft’s remains were ever re-buried in our current church. Click on this link to read Winston Charles’ recollection of the day the mystery ended in 2001, during the renovation of the Christ Church sanctuary.
